Free ‘Focus loves Arizona’ 5 week art program for Autistic and Special Needs Kids

Focus comic are proud to announce that they will be starting a New free 5 week comic art program for autistic and special needs kids in Arizona.

This course champions autistic and special needs kids through comic art. The students will draw Focus, one of the worlds first autistic superheroes, themselves as a superhero against different Arizonian landmarks. They will explore self & identity plus different human emotions through comic art. Includes Pencilling, inking and coloring techniques. Students who complete the art program will receive a certificate of achievement featuring their art colored professionally by Focus comic creator Yvonne Wan. The certificate will resemble a Focus comic cover, which is a dream come true for those who love Focus, super heroes and comics.

The “Focus loves Arizona” art program will take place every Sunday via online classes on Zoom.

The first class starts Sunday 7 November 2021.

Deadline to apply Saturday 11pm 6 November 2021.

Duration of course: 5 weeks. Note: There are no classes during thanks giving weekend (Nov 28).

Class Duration: 40 Minutes. Additional support is available if needed.

Note: In week 1 (Sunday November 7th), there will be two classes back to back for each student (with a 20 minute break in between the classes). Subsequent weeks will be one class each Sunday. There are no classes during the thanks giving weekend. There are different time slots available. You may communicate which time slots you prefer if you want, and we can try and accommodate that. If you don’t communicate a time slot preference we will assign the student so that all the groups are as evenly distributed in student numbers.

Time schedule for classes on Sunday November 7th:

Group B: Part one of the class: 11am – 11.40. // 11.40-12noon small break // Part two of the class: 12 noon to 12.40 noon

Group C: Part one of the class: 1pm to 1.40pm // 1.40pm to 2pm small break // Part two of the class: 2pm to 2.40

Group D: Part one of the class: 3pm to 3.40 // 3.40 to 4 pm small break // Part two of the class: 4pm to 4.40

Classes times for Sunday November 14, November 21 and December 5th are as follow:

Option 1: Starts at 3PM Every Sunday. Ending 3.40

Option 2: Starts 4pm Every Sunday. Ending 4.40

Option 3: Starts 5pm Every Sunday. Ending 5.40

Class Duration: 40 Minutes Every Sunday. Additional support is available if needed. Note: There will be 1 class a week except on November 7th as there will be two classes per student. The final class will take place in week 5 which comprises of a class and online graduation ceremony. Students may choose their time slots for week 1 providing the time slots desired are not full.

Information about Focus comic and this 5 week program:

Focus comic features one of the worlds first autistic super heroes, plus art by autistic interns. Focus comic creator Yvonne Wan will lead this art program with the support of her team. The Arizonian students will receive a certificate of achievement bearing their art professionally colored by Yvonne Wan as a reward for completing the course. There will be an online graduation ceremony for the students in week 5. The ceremony will take place on zoom.

This course is for Autistic and Special needs Kids ages 6-15 in Arizona.

Program guide:

Class 1

Title of the class: Focus loves Arizona: Part 1

Subtitle: One-point perspective Landscape drawing: Arizonian Desert, The Grand Canyon / Monument Valley and a Highway.

Style: Japanese Kawaii Style (Cute)

Group Zoom Class Duration: 40 minutes.

The students will learn about the beautiful natural environment that surrounds us in Arizona, plus a little bit about bio diversity. The students will learn how to draw kawaii (cute) style. They will learn how to draw landscapes from a one-point perspective, bio diversity and the art of depicting different facial expressions, feelings and emotions. The students will engage in transformative social and emotional learning.

Art material list: Pencil, A4 Printer size paper, eraser, long and short ruler. Sharpener.

Please keep this art work in a safe place as we will need it in week 4&5.

Please send a scan of your childs art to the teacher by the end of day of class.

Class 2

Title of the class: Focus loves Arizona: Part 2

Subtitle: Two point perspective Architectural drawing: Phoenix Corporate Center: Beginners &Advance class

Style: Japanese Kawaii Style (Cute)

Group Zoom Class Duration: 40 minutes.

The students will learn about the beautiful architectural building of Phoenix Corporate Center. The students will learn how to draw kawaii (cute) style. They will learn how to draw buildings from a two-point perspective with a non-technical and technical approach. The students will engage in transformative social and emotional learning.

Art material list: Pencil, A4 Printer size paper, eraser, long and short ruler. Sharpener.

Class 3:

Title of the class: Focus loves Arizona: Part 3

Subtitle: Super heroes and Villains. Character Design. Scale. Postures.

Style: Japanese Kawaii Style (Cute)

Group Zoom Class Duration: 40 minutes.

The students will learn how to draw Focus the autistic super hero, themselves as a super hero and a bank robber making his escape. The students will learn about drawing to scale, different postures, facial expressions; light and shadow. This class enriches the students understanding of self and identity. The students will learn how to draw kawaii (cute) style. The students will engage in transformative social and emotional learning.

Art material list: Pencil, A4 Printer paper, eraser, long and short ruler. Sharpener. Marker. Coloring Pencils or Markers.

Please photo copy this completed art in time for the class commencing week 4.

Class 4

Title of the class: Focus loves Arizona: Part 4

Subtitle: Image Transfer Techniques, Scale & Composition.

Style: Japanese Kawaii Style (Cute)

Group Zoom Class Duration: 40 minutes.

The students will learn how to apply image transfer techniques, scale and composition in class. Students will learn techniques that create the perception of distance and depth through scale and composition.  The students will engage in transformative social and emotional learning.

Art material list: Pencil, Original sketch from week 1. 2 Photo copies of student’s art produced in Week 3. Eraser, Sharpener. Scissors. Ball point pen. Regular Black Sharpie.

Class 5

Title of the class: Focus loves Arizona: Part 5

Subtitle: Super heroes and villains in Arizona. Inking and Coloring. + Graduation Ceremony

Style: Japanese Kawaii Style (Cute)

Group Zoom Class Duration: 60 minutes.

The students will learn about inking and coloring techniques in this class. They will also learn how to present their ideas. The students will also graduate by the end of this 60 minute class.

Art material list: Original sketch from week 4. Coloring Pencils, Eraser, Sharpener. Thick and thin black marker. Long and short ruler. Optional: White gelly roll pen. Derwent blender and burnisher pencil.

Please send scans of the students art and submit them to the teacher by the end of each Sunday after class.
