Focus Loves Glendale Free Comic Art Program

Program Description: Immerse yourself into the world of comics and super heroes. Learn how to create comic strips with Yvonne Wan, Focus comic creator and her team of industry professionals. Learn how to translate a script into a comic strip, master the art of pencilling and comic inking. Learn how to present your art to others. Receive a Certificate of achievement featuring the students art work colored professionally by Yvonne Wan and her Autistic Intern Carson Shuler at graduation. Have your Focus Comic 2025 Class photo taken with the US Air Force Honor guard and local heroes at graduation. Receive gifts at graduation to celebrate our students accomplishments (gifts include quality art supplies, and gifts from different agencies including the US Air force).

Who: Free Comic Strip art program for autistic and or special needs students. Ages 4 years old and up (No age limit).

Learning Format / Class frequency:

  • One to one Tutoring or Group class options are available.
  • Online or in Person classes are available.
  • Students may pace their learning by attending classes each week, or attend an accelerated program where classes 1-3 can be completed within a day or two depending our students abilities and availability.
  • Program duration: 1-4 classes depending on the students abilities.
  • Each class is approximately 40 minutes depending on the students abilities.
  • Students are not required to attend all the classes to graduate.

When:

  • Program dates: Join any time between now and November 19th 2025. Students may choose in person or online classes or both. First in-person group class is Nov 1st 2025. Students can turn up anytime between 12noon to 5pm at the Small meeting room at Glendale Main Library. Class duration is minimum 40 minutes. One to one classes are available throughout October and November 19th by appointment only. See program schedule options at the bottom of this page.
  • Flexible class times and formats.
  • Deadline to sign up: November 19th 2025.  
  • In Person Graduation event is Saturday November 22nd 2025, 10.30am at Samurai comics store Glendale 10.30am.

Where:

  • Online (Zoom) classes and/or In-person classes at Glendale Main Library, Small Meeting Room. 5959 W Brown St, Glendale, AZ 85302 are available (see schedule below)
  • In person Graduation takes place at Samurai Comics Store Glendale Branch, 6808 N Dysart Rd #148, Glendale, AZ 85307 on Saturday November 22nd 2025, 10.30am.

Class options based on abilities: (Age categories are rough guidelines only. Students will be assigned a class based on their abilities):

  • Beginners Level (4 years – 7years) :
  • Intermediate Level (8-12 years)
  • Advanced Level (13 years and up).

What we will learn:

  • Class (1) Introduction to Focus comics and the art of story telling through sequential Art. Learn how to translate a script into a comic strip. An introduction to pencilling. An introduction to practical inking techniques such a linear hatching, and erasing techniques.
  • Class (2) An introduction to practical inking techniques such a linear hatching, and erasing techniques.
  • Class (3) Online Presentation skills Class with Industry professionals. Confirmed Guests include Yvonne Wan Focus comic creator, Patrick Goddard of 2000AD (the legendary home of Judge Dredd). Other industry professionals TBC. Where and When: On Zoom: Sunday November 16 2pm. Note: To be eligible for this class, students must complete Classes 1& 2.
  • Class (4) In Person Presentation skills Class and Graduation. We will take a class photo with the US Air force honor guard and local heroes at the start of the graduation event at Samurai comics, November 22 at 10.30am. Our students art will be exhibited on the comic shelf at Samurai comics prior to the graduation award ceremony. Our students will be expected to present their art in under a minute, in front of their class mates and our video camera to promote them as young artists. We will provide guidance on what they could say/communicate as part of their presentation. Our students will receive a certificate of achievement featuring their art, plus gifts to celebrate their accomplishments

Special Industry Guests: Yvonne Wan, Focus comic Creator. Patrick Goddard, Comic Artist at 2000AD, the legendary home of Judge Dredd. Other Industry professionals TBC.

Agency Reps attending: Luke Air Force Honor Guard / Others TBC.

Agency Vehicles at the event: TBC.

Art Supplies needed: All art supplies are provided for our in person students. Those learning remotely, will need paper, pencil, black marker, long and short ruler (or something with a straight edge). Optional: Water color paints, small paint brush, cup of water.

Schedule Options:

In person group class – ALL LEVELS : Saturday 1st November. Turn up any time between 12 noon to 5pm. Venue: Glendale Main Library. Small Meeting Room. 5959 W Brown St, Glendale, AZ 85302. Minimum class duration is 40 minutes. You can choose to do 3 classes on the same day, or pace your learning by joining us on a weekly basis. There are 4 classes that completes this program.

Media release form: Please sign our standard media release form before class begins. The standard form gives us permission to include the child in the class photo and highlights film so they can remember their special day. We will also share the students art work online, to promote autistic and or special needs talent in the community.
